Our tour of New England included the southeast coast of Maine - the 2nd most bike-friendly state in the country according to the League of American Bicyclists. We visited bike-friendly Portland and the Kennebec River Rail-Trail near Augusta (the state capitol), saw several lighthouses and laid-back Bailey's Island and other towns. The highight of the trip was Acadia National Park with its quintessential Maine coastline - but we didn't bike there. Scroll down or click on the link below for more details:
Kennebec River Rail Trail: The trail runs along the Kennebec River from Augusta to Gardiner, Maine. There's a gap in Hallowell where the trail runs along the road, but the town was fun to explore with shops and restaurants.

Portland Eastern Promenade: In Portland, we focused on the Old Port district and east end. We biked along the Eastern Promenade Trail with great water views and the interesting Narrow Gauge Railroad museum.
