Hockhocking Adena Bikeway

The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway runs 20 miles, mostly along the Hocking River between Athens and Nelsonville in southeast Ohio, along an old Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad bed which formerly was a tow path along the Hocking Canal. The trail connects Ohio University iin Athens and Hocking College in Nelsonville, passing through Wayne National Forest, parks and conservation areas. The sections at the two ends are more commercial areas, but the middle from about miles 5 to 15 is very scenic. Paved, flat, an easy ride. One of a few trails open at night. Bike shops and rentals are available. (Reip report: May 2015)

Holmes County Trail

This is the only trail designed to accommodate Amish buggies, having a separate buggy lane. 15 miles are completed between Fredericksburg and Killbuck, OH; when completed, will link with the Mohican Valley Trail (see below). We were based at Millersburg at approximately the midpoint of the trail. Half the population of Holmes County is Amish (one of the largest Amish communities in the world) which led to some interesting sights. Very pretty countryside and towns, and good food, too. (Trip report: May 2012)
At the western end of the trail, a 7.5 mile extension has been completed from Glenmont to Gann. Portion from Killbuck to Glenmont is still a future. (First report: May 2012; latest update: Jan. 2017)

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath

The 85-mile Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath offers biking, hiking, jogging, horseback riding, and historical exhibits. Between Cleveland and Akron, the towpath is the main trail through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Here we visited the area around Navarre, Ohio, near the southern end of the trail. The total Canalway runs 110 miles from Cleveland to New Philadelphia, OH and is a National Heritage Area - by creating a link from Lake Erie to the Ohio River the canal was an important part of transportation history.  (Trip report: Sept. 2007)

River Trail (Marietta)

The River Trail runs 3.5 miles along the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers at Marietta, across the river from West Virginia. The paved trail goes through downtown, with access to shops and restaurants. It links several parks along the river front, with scenic river views. Interesting historic sites are along the trail - in 1788, Marietta was the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory as the U.S. expanded westward. Sternwheeler river excursions are available from the landing at the Ohio River Museum along the trail. Some sections go through commercial or residential areas, as well. The trail is shared with pedestrians, there were many babystrollers too, so keep aware. (Trip report: June 2016)
